For the past 33 years, Heather has been employed by Fraser Academy in a variety of roles, including Head Tutor and Director of Language Training, where she concurrently trained tutors from across Canada and United States in the Orton-Gillingham approach. Upon her recent retirement, Heather was contracted to assume the position of Learning Centre Director for the B.C. Learning Centres for Children with Dyslexia.
Heather is a member of the International Dyslexia Association, the Canadian Academy of Therapeutic Tutors, the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, and has served on the board of the B.C. International Dyslexia Association, the BC Learning Disabilities Association and the Zion Lutheran School.
During her 38 years as an Orton-Gillingham practitioner, Heather has tutored hundreds of students from grades two to twelve, mentored countless teachers and tutors, and has worked with many prominent psychologists and other educational professionals in an effort to help children with dyslexia. Heather’s passion comes from being a parent of two dyslexic sons and being a dyslexic herself, giving her firsthand experience of the difference multi-sensory language training makes on the lives of the students and their parents.
Karen Leopold, MS Ed, an Accredited Training Fellow of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE), holds four New York State teaching certifications: General Education N-6, English 7-12, Reading, and Special Education. She has taught in one-on-one and in group settings, and worked as the Multisensory Language Consultant for several private and public schools. She served as the Director of the Kildonan Teacher Training Institute for 7 years, and 3 years as the Director of Language Training at Camp Dunnabeck. Karen has provided extensive teacher training, conducted workshops, and presented at many conferences in the United States and Canada. She has published The Student Notebook I (Basic), and II (Advanced), which is geared toward the dyslexic student, and is coauthor of the Learning Cursive workbooks, Learning Print, and Conquering Spelling Demons I and II. Currently, she is serving as President of the Colorado Rocky Mountain Branch of the International Dyslexia Association and is on the AOGPE Board of Trustees.
