Learning Centre Admissions

Who Should Apply

If your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia and you’re unable to afford the private schooling or tutoring that your child desperately needs, there’s no better place to turn to than the B.C. Learning Centres for Children with Dyslexia.

We are British Columbia’s only free-of-charge, after-school program dedicated to helping students in grades 2-5 remediate their reading and spelling skills to become successful learners. The B.C. Learning Centres for Children with Dyslexia are set up to help students achieve this through:

One-on-one student/tutor relationship that enable tutors to employ multisensory-learning techniques on an individual level;
Diagnostic and prescriptive one-to-one tutoring with a certified OG tutor to address each student’s specific challenges;
Adapted curriculum, enabling students to demonstrate knowledge and talents in alternative ways;
Firm support structure with emphasis on organizational training, which helps students to develop positive study habits;
Multi-sensory learning approach with emphasis on language development, self-esteem and self-advocacy;
Use of technology that supports learning independence; and
Teaching principles and practices based on over 25 years of frontline experience influenced by the latest research on human intelligence, cognitive development, dyslexia and learning disabilities.
The result is an all-encompassing experience for students, who gain the confidence and tools they need to become successful learners.

Diagnostic Assessment

Prior to registering for our tutoring program, students must have a psycho-educational assessment. These assessments are extremely useful as they enable students and parents to identify individual learning styles and pinpoint areas of challenge so that the appropriate strategies can be applied to improve their performance. This enables students to take charge of their learning. As students work with their tutors, the tutors use the information from the assessment to direct student programs and planning.

Student Admission Forms:

Prior to registering for tutoring sessions, students must have a diagnostic assessment.

These assessments are extremely useful as they enable students and parents to identify individual learning styles and pinpoint areas of challenge so that the appropriate strategies can be applied to improve their performance. Students take charge of their learning, as they then work with knowledgeable tutors who use the information from the diagnostic assessment to direct student program and planning. Any students who need Orton-Gillingham must have an assessment done to determine where to start in the program.

All students and families have a personal interview before being accepted into the BC Learning Centre tutoring program. Students are also tested to determine their reading, spelling and comprehension level during the interview.
